The 'Out of Context' Technique: Crafting Surreal Visual Metaphors

Ā

Another way to create metaphors using the out of context technique is by dressing the subject of an image in a completely absurd way for the situation theyā€™re in.

This immediately grabs the viewerā€™s attention.

Remember, we can never predict what meaning our audience will assign to an image, but we can anticipate what questions they will ask. In this case, theyā€™ll likely wonder: Why is a medieval knight surfing a wave?

We donā€™t know what meaning theyā€™ll give it, but one thing is certain, theyā€™ll create a mini story in their minds to make sense of the absurdity.
